Shady Behaviour & You

These are the rules for engaging in shady behaviour in The Fractured Realm. They have been created to give players a framework to safely and fairly engage in such activities.

Remember, laws exist to be broken. Nobody is forced to play a lawful character!

However, do remember that In Character Actions mean In Character Consequences (ICA = ICC). If your character breaks a law, there are consequences if they are caught!

Stealing

Start the Scene:

  • You need to roleplay (RP) at least one (1) post before attempting to steal from someone.

  • Try to hint at your plan to steal in your initial roleplay.

  • The attempt will be one full post. Roll after that post.

Roll:

  • Time to roll the dice!

Outcome:

  • If your roll succeeds, you successfully steal from the other person.

  • To take more items or something special they have, you both need to consent. For example, both players decide that the thief can take a rare or valuable item belonging to the other character.

Generally, prices for consumables are along these lines:

(Remember, the rarer the item, regardless of what it is, the more expensive it will be.)

Vandalism

  • For small acts of vandalism (like breaking a window, writing on a wall, or forcing a door open), ask the person who owns the building ICly (OOC permission).

  • For bigger acts of vandalism affecting a whole area, ask both the person who owns the building and the faction lead (OOC permission).

Try Your Luck:

  • If there are NPC guards around, choose one to see if you can outsmart them with a roll.

  • Guards are usually present in Faction HQ, around the Mage Tower, the Stonehurst  Keep, or any other major faction building. They are not generally present all over cities.

  • If the business owner or homeowner uses a lock, then you must roll to see if your character can break that lock. The same goes for wards. Remember, non-magical characters may not be able to dispel magical wards, so they may need to find another way to bypass them.

  • If your roll on these is a win (remember, for guarded, locked places you need to succeed on two (2) rolls and for locked places, you need to succeed on one (1) roll, a ward is another roll, as well) is a win, go ahead and roleplay as you usually do.

  • If you lose, you need to wait six hours before you can try again.

Tell the Owner:

  • Send a report of your roleplaying to the building owner.

  • Add details like hints for future RP (for example, if you left blood on broken glass after smashing a window).

Breaking and Entering

Get Permission:

  • Ask the person who owns the IC building first.

  • You don't need to ask if you're just taking common items from places that aren't rented out privately.

Try Your Luck:

  • If your roll is successful, just roleplay as you usually would.

  • If you don't succeed, you have to wait six hours before you can try again.

  • If there are NPC guards, you need to choose one and roll against them to see if you get past.

  • Guards are usually present in Faction HQ, around the Mage Tower, the Stonehurst  Keep, or any other major faction building. They are not generally present all over cities.

Tell the Owner:

  • Afterward, you need to write to the person who owns the IC building and tell them what happened.

  • Make sure to mention any hints for more roleplay, like if you broke a lock to get in or what items you took.

Spying

Get Approval:

  • You need to ask everyone involved in the RP first.

  • If the spying is happening in a place where anyone can join in (an open RP area), you don't need to ask.

Setting Up and Boundaries

  • Remember to consider how loud the environment is. For example, it's not realistic to overhear a chat from the other side of a noisy room, even if your character has enhanced hearing.

  • You can only start "listening" after you've made your first post in the RP.

  • Stay involved in the story. Just making one post doesn't mean you can spy on the whole event if it lasts for hours.

Try Your Luck

  • If you're trying to stay hidden, roll the dice to see if someone notices you.

What Happens If You're Spotted

  • Getting caught spying will likely lead to ICC.

Bounties, Negative Magic Effects (Curses/Hexes), Etc.

Always get consent from another player before your roleplay of this type affects their character or their character's business/store. This is a must-do according to TFR rules.

You can use another character's name, lie about them, or engage in other non-modifying actions without asking first. However, if what you're doing will be seen by a large audience or cause serious consequences for another character (like making them a target for violence or aggression), you need to talk about it beforehand. Examples include making a scene at a public event, slander or libel, or encouraging a group to act against someone in a violent or aggressive way.

This does NOT apply to bounties.
